Ageing Feet

About the problem:

  • As we age our feet naturally develop problems because the skin tends to thin and lose its elasticity.
  • We may find it a little more difficult to bend down to the feet and to see as well as we used to.
  • It can take longer to heal and arthritic changes can set into the small joints of the foot and ankle.

What can we do?

  • The good news is, a lot can be done to make feet more comfortable, relieve pain and maintain mobility.
  • During a routine footcare appointment at the clinic we can trim, file and smooth your toenails, remove any hard skin and corns and generally make your feet feel much more comfortable and well cared for.
  • This can improve your quality of life enormously, keep you on the move and it’s one less thing to worry about!

  • Athletes get it but lots of non-athletes get it too.
  • By far the easiest way to get athlete's foot is not washing and drying in between your toes properly.
  • You can also pick it up in communal areas such as swimming pools, shower and changing rooms.
  • The fungus just loves the moist, warm and dark spaces between your toes especially when you put your socks and shoes on. It's like a little incubator!
  • So, how is this going to feel? Well, it'll be very itchy, scaly, scratchy and maybe a bit sore.

What can we do?

  • At the clinic we can talk over the problem and recommend some highly effective treatment options.

Chilblains

About the problem:

  • Chilblains are mostly seen on the feet during the cold winter months.
  • Having cold feet doesn’t necessarily mean you will develop chilblains; they are mostly due to poor circulation and an abnormal reaction to the cold.
  • This condition was seen a lot more before the advent of central heating and double glazing.
  • They are small itchy, red swellings on the toes, which can become increasingly painful, can swell and then dry out leaving cracks in the skin which expose the foot to the risk of infection.
  • There are many other medical causes of chilblains which we can discuss with you at the clinic.

What can we do?

Diabetes

We are highly trained in this subject area and take great pride in keeping our knowledge and skills up to date.

How does diabetes affect feet?

For some people with diabetes, problems can occur because nerves and blood vessels supplying your feet become damaged. This can affect:

  • the feeling in your feet (peripheral neuropathy); and
  • the circulation in your feet (ischaemia)

These changes can be very gradual and you may not notice them. This is why it is essential you have your feet regularly checked and any foot problems treated by a fully qualified chiropodist/ podiatrist. It is also a good idea to have a yearly diabetic foot screening check for peripheral neuropathy and ischaemia.

How can we help?

  • We can provide up to date advice and education on the diabetic foot.
  • We treat general foot conditions such as nail problems, skin conditions, corns, callus (hard skin build up), heel cracks and fungal infections.
  • Additionally, we conduct diabetic foot screening and assessments to check sensation and circulation.
  • We then offer you advice and education, tell you your risk category, i.e. low, medium or high in accordance with NHS SIGN Management of Diabetes clinical guidelines.
  • We also have direct referral pathways to other diabetic specialists if required.

If you have diabetes, you’ll be in safe and caring hands with us
